Inside the AVRS System

Scope

Columbia Green Technologies, Inc (CGT) will provide all materials and necessary equipment to furnish and install Advanced Vegetative Roof System (AVRS) green roof trays. AVRS includes special, extensive, inorganic, blended soil medium and pre-selected stonecrop plant species. AVRS will only be installed by an applicator who is pre-approved by CGT.

Quality Assurance

Prior to installing the trays the roof shall be inspected by an engineer of the owners choosing, and/or CGT, to determine the adequacy of the roof surface to accept the green roof trays. A 24 hour flood test will be completed prior to inspection. A structural engineer will need to approve the flood test load prior to flooding.

AVRS Trays

The trays are a semi-gloss black in color and are composed of 100% recycled 100 mil high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). Each tray contains a .011” copper wire mesh screen attached over the drainage holes. The trays will attach together by means of an overlapping lip on the upper side wall and by vinyl removable rivets.

Tray size: 2’ X 2’ X 4 5/8”.
Tray weight: Based on regionally-specific engineered growing medium, 15-20 lbs SF average / Field Moisture Capacity (FMC)
Tray clearance above roof is 5/8 inches.

Growth Media – Soil

The growth media consists of an engineered, light-weight blend of inorganic and organic components to be purchased by CGT. Zeba™, a water retentive additive made from natural cornstarch, is included
in the soil mix.

Plant Media

A recommended design mixture of fibrous succulents that can thrive in a non-irrigated, extensive rooftop environment in the project location. Plants shall be selected to their USDA hardiness zone classification.

Plants should be a minimum size of 1.5” wide plugs and planted with no less than 6” on center. Options are available to use plant cuttings broadcast onto the growth medium as well as hydro-seeding. Plants will be installed in accordance with the landscape design.

Installation

Unless otherwise permitted, the AVRS installation will be done between April 1 and November 1, but not when the weather is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit or above 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Only qualified applicators, pre-approved by Columbia Green Technologies Inc, shall install AVRS.

Maintenance and Warranty

Maintenance includes watering, spot weeding and application of fertilizers (if necessary) until a uniform stand of plants is achieved.

After the initial 30 days, periodic watering of the plant media is highly recommended for the first year after installation to ensure proper root development. Watering should be accomplished on an as needed basis. The AVRS applicator can assist with this plant maintenance for an additional fee.
